Papers include letters from his mother Mehetable Sullivan, his sister Frances M., and his brothers James S. and Jonathan pertaining to their daily lives, and correspondence concerning his historical and genealogical research and writings. Also contains genealogical materials gathered by Amory on the Sullivan family, including correspondence (mostly transcriptions) between William, Richard (1799-1861), and Richard Sullivan, Jr. (b. 1820), 1712-1820.

Thomas Coffin Amory, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Coffin) Amory, was born in Boston in 1767. He married Hannah Rowe Linzee in 1785. Following the family tradition, he became a merchant in Boston. In the course of his business, he bought and sold all types of products and acted as an exporter, wholesaler, importer and retailer, depending on what his associates wished of him.
